Ready to Reach Your Potential?
The role of a Concentric Rehabilitation speech pathologist can be diverse, however they particularly help individuals improve their communication and swallowing skills.
Speech Therapy
You may be experiencing difficulties with communication and using language to express yourself or struggling with eating and drinking. Our therapists will create a tailored plan by assessing and identifying where your problem areas are, and providing strategies and training programs to assist in improving your skills in these areas.
What does a speech therapist do?
Speech therapists help you reach your full potential, even when you’re experiencing communication difficulties. Additionally, they can assess your swallow and formulate a diet that allows you to maintain the right nutritional state, without placing yourself at risk.
At Concentric, our speech therapists are able to work with those who have long-standing problems with talking and interpreting language. Additionally, they can work with those who’ve developed such problems following an acute neurological event, such as a stroke. In such instances, they may work alongside a broader team of allied health professionals, including physiotherapists and occupational therapists.
Our speech therapists are also able to assess and work with variations in the way you speak. This includes the sudden development of abnormalities such as speaking in a croaky or breathy voice. Additionally, they can help you overcome problems such as stammers and struggling to find the right words.
When it comes to managing swallowing difficulties, our speech therapists can use a range of diagnostic tools to determine what is safe for you to swallow. Depending on their findings, they may recommend thickening your liquids, switching to soft foods, and other safety methods that allow you to maintain your diet.
At Concentric our speech therapists offer a wide range of services across the lifespan, including those with an NDIS plan, to improve communication and swallowing skills.
They create a tailored plan by assessing and identifying where problem areas are, and provide strategies and training programs to assist improving skills in the following areas:
Speech sounds (pronunciation)
Language (understanding concepts and instructions, and use of words and sentences)
Social communication skills
Literacy (reading and writing)
Fluency (stuttering)
Voice
Eating and drinking (Dysphagia)
Alternative & Augmentative Communication (using an alternate way to communicate, such as pictures or symbols, or through a device like an iPad)
Complex communication disorders (arising from stroke or traumatic brain injury)
Who might benefit from speech therapy?
Patients from all walks of life can benefit from speech therapy. Some of the most common reasons include:
- Managing speech and swallowing difficulties following a stroke
- Swallowing assessments and management with conditions such as achalasia and oesophageal cancer
- Swallowing, speech, and language management in older patients
- Language comprehension in those with long-term disabilities
In addition to working directly with patients, those who provide our speech therapy services can liaise with carers and family members. For your convenience, they also provide mobile services where necessary.
We also have speech therapists who are certified LVST LOUD practitioners - LSVT LOUD is an effective speech treatment for people with Parkinson's disease (PD) and other neurological conditions.
LSVT LOUD trains people with PD to use their voice at a more normal loudness level while speaking at home, work, or in the community. Key to the treatment is helping people "recalibrate" their perceptions so they know how loud or soft they sound to other people and can feel comfortable using a stronger voice at a normal loudness level.
