May is Exercise Right Month, an initiative powered by Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA) with the theme “Who Moves You?”. This month, we’re highlighting inspiring stories of individuals who have embraced the benefits of exercise.
We recently spoke with Lachlan, a 34-year-old avid para-sailor, about his journey with exercise and movement. Lachlan lives with Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy, has a significant hearing impairment, and communicates using Auslan. He is an active member of the Deaf Community and enjoys video games and busking.
Currently, Lachlan is working with Concentric Exercise Physiologists at our Burwood Clinic to enhance his strength and fitness for sailing. Their sessions incorporate both land-based exercises and hydrotherapy in order to accomplish his goals.
In a recent video, Lachlan shared his experiences with undertaking regular exercise, supervised by an Exercise Physiologist, and the support he receives from his support worker andย his Auslan interpreter, Bec.
Lauren Marcos, National Lead of Exercise Physiology at Concentric, expressed her admiration for Lachlan, stating, “Lachlan is possibly one of the most inspiring people I have ever worked with. I think everyone should hear his story.”
During the video, Lachlan answered several questions, including how accessing Exercise Physiology has motivated him, his current training goals with his Exercise Physiology as a para-sailor with Cerebral Palsy, the ways regular exercise has changed his life, and his advice for those considering seeing an Exercise Physiologist. He was observed watching his Auslan interpreter, Bec, to understand the questions being asked.
