20 – 26 May is Exercise Right Week – an annual awareness initiative created by Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA) aimed to highlight the benefits of exercise for your health and well-being, and to help you understand where to get the right advice for your individual needs.ย This year’s theme is just move.
At Concentric we employ 20 ESSA accredited Exercise Physiologists. Below is a story of how our Exercise Physiologists work together with our clients to achieve and even exceed their goals.
30-year-old Brandon Soames is a motivated and competitive individual who accesses Exercise Physiology and other allied health services at Concentric Revesby. Brandon also lives with Prader-Willi Syndrome.
Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) is a rare genetic disorder characterised by a range of physical, mental, and behavioural challenges, including insatiable hunger, low muscle tone, developmental delays, and cognitive impairments. However, Brandon has refused to let these obstacles define him.
Under the guidance of his dedicated multidisciplinary team at Concentric, Brandon has been participating in a tailored exercise program that allows for choice and control.
Check out Brandon running so well using the Blazepods during his exercise session.
Brandon has smashed through his goals he has set with his therapy team and here are just a few he has achieved in the past 3 months:
- Brandon is able to express his most important needs and wants in a gym setting using goal setting and exercise visual cardsย
- Brandon has improved in his weight management, reducing his cardiovascular risk from a sedentary lifestyle
- Brandon doubled his 2 min step test time, improving his stepping ability and endurance to access his community safely and with less shortness of breath
- Brandon has doubled his sit to stand assessment to be able to confidently risk from a chair and stand up from the groundย
- Brandon also improved his plank hold time by 43 seconds to be able to sit up and stand for longer periods of time.
Brandon is such a motivated individual who tries hard with his gross motor activities. We love working together with him and cannot wait to see what he can achieve in the future.ย He is certainly a great example of the benefits of just moving.
