Customer: Graden Industries

Graden Industries is a family owned business that started out life as Graden Engineering in 1986 in the Melbourne suburb of Coburg. Graden entered the turf machinery business with the development of a specialised turf roller for cricket wickets and a walk behind scarifier. In 1993 the company formed Graden Turf Machinery and a year later started to produce ride-on and walk-behind mowers. Also in '94 they launched a new tractor-mounted version of the successful GS03 (walk behind) Scarifier called the Swing Wing Scarifier, and had some success with exports to Asia.

Graden was fortunate to form a relationship with JDS International which has represented Graden in the Asian region ever since. Realising that the export potential of the machines was very important for the future, Graden started setting up U.S. distributorships in '97... and more recently opened up an office there... while R&K Kensett represents Graden in the U.K./European market as well as the Middle East.

In 2000 Graden designed a new mower from the ground up for the Australian market: the Mighty Compak. Also during 2000 Graden had a corporate re-structure and transformed into one all encompassing company named Graden Industries. Since the start of the new millennium the design team have been extremely busy with several new machines being brought to market including an updated version of the Swing-Wing Verticutter, a new tractor mounted verticutter (GBS-1200), new mower designs, as well as the revolutionary Contour Sand Injection Verticutter. In '05 Graden added two new golf greens rollers to its stable, alongwith the Suburban mower - the fastest selling mower to date in the Australian market.

Being a small dynamic company enables Graden to bring new products to market faster than our competitors. Our ongoing research and development in conjunction with our distributors around the world gives us a real advantage and helps keep us at the forefront of the aerification, rolling and zero-turn mowing industries. With some exciting new projects currently underway, Graden are definitely the company to watch for innovations in the fine turf industry.

Keith Bainbridge will be interviewed about how Autodesk's Digital Prototyping solutions - incorporating 3D design and modelling - have been instrumental in making Graden an international leader in its field.

The Real World Through Digital Eyes

Autodesk has unveiled the latest versions of its design software for manufacturers, enhancing the ability of manufacturers to implement the process of digital prototyping.

Digital prototyping now gives users the ability to virtually design a complete product and simulate how it will work under real world conditions before it is built.

With updates to Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD Mechanical, AutoCAD Electrical, Autodesk AliasStudio, Autodesk Showcase, and Autodesk Productstream software products (unveiled at the company's annual World Press Days event) users can now connect industrial design, engineering, and manufacturing teams through the use of a single digital model.

Digital prototyping reduces a manufacturer's reliance on physical prototypes, which in turn helps reduce cost and time to market speeds in highly competitive industries.

"Manufacturers seem to have lost that ability to be able to walk next door to the manufacturing plant and have a look at a product, pick it up and then play with it," says Autodesk Manufacturing Solutions Division sales execution manager Rod Hunt.

"In Australia we are seeing a lot of movement for manufacturing to move offshore into the Asian market. Being able to design within the Australian market and then test within the Australian market to verify designs before they go offshore for manufacturing is becoming increasingly important. With the release of our 2009 product line, we're helping manufacturers address their business-critical issues such as innovation, support for larger designs, and working with other people's data. By putting powerful digital prototyping technology within the reach of mainstream manufacturers, they can experience the future results of their work with analysis, simulation tools, and detailed visualisation," he said.

Since its initial release in 1999, manufacturers from automotive and consumer products, to industrial equipment and machinery, have relied on Inventor software to streamline their workflows.

The Inventor 2009 product line makes enhancements to many of the core design tools within the Inventor product line, offering increases in productivity.

According to Hunt, an increasing number of electronic components within designs, especially within the automotive industry, are changing the way that designers interact with the software.

"Manufacturers are now looking to integrate an exploding number of parts into digital designs, and manufacturers are looking to get new models out within months of a release; phones are a great example of this," Hunt said.

According to Hunt, the biggest feature of the 2009 product release is the software's 64 bit platform.

"Manufacturer's are now talking massive amount of parts and massive amounts of assembly for huge speed gains. This is something that manufacturers always ask of us and have demanded from us," Hunt said.
